EMDR therapy is different than traditional talk therapy and does not require you to discuss in detail an upsetting issue, event or performance, but works by using the brain neural pathways through eye movements. It works quickly by allowing the brain to process an upsetting event versus focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors (the traditional talk therapy approach). You will always remember the upsetting event, but you see the change through your response which feels like a simple moment in time minus the sting and emotions.
Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts that are often felt in our body through panic attacks, flashbacks, anxiety, depression and other triggered responses. When this type of stress response remains unprocessed in the brain, an upsetting image, thought, and emotion often create an overwhelming feeling. EMDR therapy works directly with the brain to process these memories and allows normal healing and life to resume.
